about

Jessica O'Donoghue writes:
The lyrics of the chorus are taken from the traditional Greek song ‘Dance of Zalongo’ and the lyric in the verse is my own text. The chorus lyrics I used and the translation is below.

The lyrics and subject matter of ‘Dance of Zalongo’ are obviously kind of heavy in its own context. However, the sentiment of my song is really meant to be an ode to women of the past who have fought for freedom and a voice for women in society. Using these lyrics is also to demonstrate the incredible strength in women and what they are prepared to sacrifice and to show that women cannot be suppressed. My lyrics in the verse are to then really bring these sentiments into the present by saying so many women have sacrificed so much for the greater cause of empowering women going forward, let’s be inspired by that and believe in ourselves and continue to empower women.

lyrics

Chorus:

I souliotisses d(th)en mathan,
Souliotisses d(th)en mathan,
Yia na zoune monaha.

Kseroun ke pos na pethenoun,
Kseroun ke pos na pethenoun,
Na mi pagoun sti sklavia.

Sti steria d(th)en zi to psari,
Sti steria d(th)en zi to psari,
Kio (ud) anthos stin ammoudia.

Ki souliotisses d(th)en zoune,
Souliotisses d(th)en zoune,
D(th)ihos tin eleftheria.

(Chorus Translation)

The women of Souli have not learned
Only to live,
They know how to die
And never be slaves.

On land the fish dies;
In sand, the flower.
And without freedom
The women of Souli die.

Verse:

You will rise up
You have given
Your heart, your love, your life
We will rise, we will rise up.
